How to Crochet

Want to learn how to crochet but not sure where to start?

Don’t worry: learning to crochet is easier than you think! We’ve tested it ourselves: anyone can learn to crochet with Hoooked. In no time, you’ll master the basic techniques and get totally Hoooked.

Practice the Basic Stitches

Once you’ve got the basic stitches down, you’ll be able to create all kinds of fun projects, from the adorable amigurumi toys you see all over Pinterest to cozy beanies and scarves.

To get started, all you need is:

  • Some yarn
  • A crochet hook (check the yarn label for the recommended size)

Then, just follow the video tutorials below and you’ll be stitching up a storm in no time!

Chain Stitch

Crochet chains are the foundation of many patterns—and the good news is, they’re super easy to learn!

  • Start with a slip knot on your hook.
  • Yarn over (wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front).
  • Pull the yarn through the loop on your hook.

That’s one chain stitch! Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create a chain of any length.

Ready to give it a try? Watch our step-by-step YouTube tutorial and start your crochet journey today!

Double Crochet (Single Crochet in US terms)

This stitch is great for making firm, solid fabric. It’s perfect for small items like coasters, amigurumis, or anything that needs structure.

  • Insert your hook into the stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through (you’ll have 2 loops on your hook).
  • Yarn over again and pull through both loops.

Let’s get started together! Watch the YouTube tutorial and learn how to make your first double crochet stitch.

Treble Crochet (Double Crochet in US terms)

Use this stitch when you want your fabric to be soft and flexible. It’s great for scarves, blankets, and clothing because it adds height and flow.

  • Yarn over once before inserting your hook into the stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through.
  • Yarnover and pull through two loops.
  • Yarn over again and pull through the last two loops.

You’re doing great—let’s try this next stitch! Follow the tutorial on YouTube and learn how to make a treble crochet.

Slip Stitch

This is the easiest stitch and super useful! It helps you join pieces, finish rows, or move your yarn without adding height.

  • Insert your hook into the stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook.

Let’s keep it smooth and simple. Watch the YouTube tutorial and learn how to use the slip stitch.

Crochet Tips

  • Start with light-colored yarn. It’s easier to see your stitches clearly, which helps while you're still learning where to insert your hook.
  • Choose the right hook size. Check the label on your yarn, it usually recommends a hook size that works best with it.
  • Take your time. Learning crochet is a process. It might feel slow at first, especially when figuring out where to insert your hook or how to pull the yarn through. That’s totally normal!
  • Practice the basic stitches. Focus on mastering chain stitch, double crochet (UK), and slip stitch before moving on to more complex patterns.
  • Count your stitches. It’s easy to accidentally add or lose stitches in each row. Counting helps you stay on track and spot mistakes early.
  • Don’t pull too tight. Tension matters! If your stitches are too tight, it’ll be hard to insert your hook. Keep your hands relaxed.
  • Use stitch markers. These are super helpful for marking the beginning of a round or keeping track of important points in your pattern.
  • Keep practicing. Like any skill, crochet gets easier with repetition. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel.

Amigurumis: start with someting fun!

Amigurumis are small, stuffed crochet toys. They’re fun to make and even more fun to gift or collect! These projects are a great way to explore crochet while creating something cute and personal.
